I think what's important about this article is not the discussion about facial recognition software but the use of scientific work. Unlike many other published papers, Buolamwini and Gebru managed to change something in the real world. Yes, police can still buy their software from someone else, but that is not the point. The important message is that science has to be used much more often as a base for making decisions.
