Quibi has one last trump card
They just don’t know about it yet
Lots has been said about the potential of the new streaming hybrid Quibi. It has been hailed as THE new player in the streaming business. Now you might ask yourself: If it is such a big deal, why have I not heard of Quibi yet?
Well, it’s highly anticipated launch failed miserably. They did not even make it into the general news discussion. Did they raise $1.75 billion for nothing? It sure seems like it.
Probably the biggest mistake Quibi made is that it did not allow users to share the content on other social media platforms (Instagram, Tik Tok, etc.). Evidently, it overestimated it’s potential to generate viral content. By now, it is safe to say that not one of their 45 shows went viral.
CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg mostly blamed the bad launch on the current epidemic. Due to the lockdown, people are stuck at home. This dramatically reduces the number of people on the go: exactly Quibi’s target group.
The question arises if Quibi can turn it around and become a successful player in the streaming market. They are standing with their back against a wall at the moment. Media coverage about Quibi has mostly been about their failed start and about internal fights between their co-founders Meg Whitman and Jeffrey Katzenberg.
